Chapter Meeting 10/10/2003

TOPIC: "Why It's Important To Be Lazy!"

Dr. Al Gini will be speaking to the group.
Even if we love our jobs, find creativity, success, and pleasure in our work, we also crave, desire, and need not to work.  No matter what we do to earn a living, we all need the benefits of leisure, lassitude, and inertia.  We all need to play more in our lives.  Too few of us have internalized the lesson that being lazy isn't necessarily a character flaw.  It can also be an act of wisdom, well-being, moderation, and maturity.

Topics that will be covered:

  • The Other Side of Play: Work Damn It!
  • What is Leisure?
  • What is Vacation Deficit disorder?
  • Why We Don't Do Nothing Well.
  • How We Play.
  • Why We need to Play More.
  • Sabbath as Metaphor

The talk will be focused on Dr. Gini's new book: The Importance of Being Lazy: In Praise of Play, Leisure, and Vacations.  Routledge, 2003.

Al Gini is a Professor of Philosophy at Loyola University Chicago and co-founder and Associate Editor of the journal Business Ethics Quarterly.  He is a regular commentator of Chicago's NPR affiliate - WBEZ and lectures extensively on business ethics, work related matters, and leadership issues to community and professional groups.
